Maintenance Matters

Clogged drains in the shower, sink, and especially the toilet can happen anytime and are always inconvenient. Your first impulse may be to call a plumber or drain cleaning service to fix the problem fast, but these issues can often be taken care of by the right tools and a little information.

Before you call the plumber, here are a few useful tools you can try first to solve your problem:

Plunger – The very first thing you should try is to simply plunge the drain to see if you can work the clog loose. It doesn’t always work, but every homeowner should have a plunger handy.

Plumber’s Snake – Also known as a cable auger, a plumber's snake can be used for deeper clogs. This is a long, flexible cable that is cranked down the drain.

Closet Auger – This tool is similar to a plumber’s snake, but is meant specifically for toilets. It is designed differently to get around the sharp turns of toilet piping.

Even with some good effort, many clogged drains need professional help. So, if you find after several attempts that your attempts didn’t solve the problem, call a plumber. This can save damaged pipes and fixtures, and a little frustration.
